Discovery of decaHz flaring in SAX J1808.4-3658

We report on the discovery of strong decaHz flaring in the early decay of two out of five outbursts of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. The decaHz flaring switches on and, after ∼3 days, off again, on a time scale of 1-2 hours. When the flaring is present, the total 0.05-10 Hz variability has a fractional rms amplitude of 20 to 30 percent, well in excess of the 8 to 12 p...

Flaring in Sax J1808.4–3658: Flow Instabilities near the Propeller Stage

We present a simultaneous periodic and aperiodic timing study of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. We analyze five outbursts of the source and for the first time provide a full and systematic investigation of the enigmatic phenomenon of the 1 Hz flares observed during the final stages of some of the outbursts. We show that strong links between pulsations and 1 Hz flares e...

The Discovery of Quiescent X-ray Emission from Sax J1808.4–3658, the Transient 2.5 Ms Pulsar

We report on a 20 ks BeppoSAX observation of the transient 2.5 ms X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 in its quiescent state. A source at a level of ∼ 3×10 counts s was detected with the BeppoSAX/MECS at a position consistent with that of SAX J1808.4–3658. The inferred 0.5–10 keV luminosity was ∼ 2− 3× 10 erg s (for a distance of 4 kpc), a value similar to that measured from other quiescent low mass ...

Optical spectroscopy and photometry of SAX J1808.4−3658 in outburst

We present phase resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of V4580 Sagittarii, the optical counterpart to the accretion powered millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, obtained during the 2008 September/October outburst. Doppler tomography of the N III λ4640.64 Bowen blend emission line reveals a focused spot of emission at a location consistent with the secondary star. The velocity of this em...

Broad Relativistic Iron Emission Line Observed in Sax J1808.4−3658

During the 2008 September–October outburst of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658, the source was observed by both Suzaku and XMM-Newton approximately 1 day apart. Spectral analysis reveals a broad relativistic Fe Kα emission line which is present in both data sets, as has recently been reported for other neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. The properties of the Fe K line observ...
